Which envelope size for which mail?
Everyday sizes

- ✓C6 (114 × 162 mm): an A4 folded in four, or a postcard — greetings, invitations
- ✓C6/C5 (114 × 229 mm): the DL alternative, machine-insertable
- ✓Square (150 × 150, 165 × 165…): announcements, premium cards
Document sizes
- ✓C5 (162 × 229 mm): an A4 folded in half — contracts, slim files
- ✓C4 (229 × 324 mm): an A4 flat, unfolded — files, catalogues, certificates
- ✓Gusset pockets: thick documents, several dozen sheets
- ✓Board-backed for documents that must not bend
Window or plain?
- ✓Window (45 × 100 mm): the address printed on the document shows through — no labels, no double entry
- ✓Standard position: 20 mm from the left edge, 20 mm from the bottom
- ✓Plain: a more premium feel — official letters, invitations
- ✓We supply the layout template so the address lands in the window
Which closure?
- ✓Peel-and-seal strip: pull the strip, press shut — best at volume
- ✓Self-seal: pre-glued flaps that press together
- ✓Gummed: lick-and-stick — the only one inserting machines accept
- ✓Pointed flap (classic) or straight flap (modern), your choice
Everything about printed envelopes
The postal zones to keep clear (and why they matter)
An envelope that travels well is one the sorting machines can read. In practice: the bottom 15 mm band across the full width stays blank (that's where the post office prints its sorting marks), the franking zone in the top right (about 74 × 40 mm) stays free for the stamp or franking mark, and the address zone carries no dark graphics. Your logo, contact details and artwork get everything else — we set up the layout so the print looks great and passes the machines.
Printing on made envelopes, or making them from scratch?
Up to a few thousand copies, we print on ready-made envelopes: fast and economical, with one known limit — we avoid edge-to-edge solids near the flaps. Beyond that, bespoke manufacture prints the sheet flat before folding and gluing: full-bleed solids, printed interiors (a security pattern in your colours), creative papers. It's the route strong visual identities take — and your quote tells you exactly where the tipping point sits for your quantity.
Pro tip
If you send invoices and reminders from software, pick the C6/C5 window envelope with gummed closure: it runs through inserting machines without jamming, and the document's address block lands exactly in the window. And order the year's supply in one go: envelope unit prices drop fast with volume, and they store perfectly somewhere dry.
Good to know
It depends on the fold: DL (110 × 220) for an A4 folded in three, C5 (162 × 229) for an A4 folded in half, C4 (229 × 324) for an A4 flat. C6/C5 (114 × 229) replaces DL when inserting is mechanised.
The standard window measures 45 × 100 mm, positioned 20 mm from the left edge and 20 mm from the bottom (French standard). We supply the template so your documents' address block lands exactly inside it.
Peel-and-seal strip for comfort at volume, self-seal for everyday use, gummed if your mail runs through inserting machines — it's the only closure they tolerate.
Yes. On ready-made envelopes we avoid edge-to-edge solids near the flaps; for total coverage (outside and inside), bespoke manufacture prints flat before folding.
Yes, with bespoke manufacture: a security pattern in your colours, or an interior design for invitations. A lovely effect on opening.
The bottom 15 mm band (sorting marks), the franking zone top right and the address zone. We check your artwork before printing: nothing goes to press if it isn't compliant.
From a few hundred copies on ready-made envelopes. Unit prices fall sharply with volume — consider ordering your annual supply.
