The hardcover book in detail

The hardcover — or case binding — is the most accomplished form of the book: sections are thread-sewn then glued into a rigid 2-3 mm case, wrapped in printed, laminated paper. The result stands on a shelf, opens flat and lasts for decades. In our workshop near Paris we produce hardcover books for publishers, brands, artists and companies: coffee-table books, photo books, monographs, corporate books and prestige reports.

Sewn up to 1,064 pages

Thread sewing allows page counts that glue alone cannot hold: up to 1,064 pages in multiples of 4, depending on paper weight. It is the binding of dictionaries, catalogues raisonnés and reference works. For a lighter soft-cover project, see our sewn perfect binding page; for a standard commercial catalogue, perfect binding up to 500 pages is often enough.

Casing & finishes

The cover wrap is printed then laminated (matt, gloss or soft-touch) before being mounted on the board. Hot foil on the front and spine, embossed title, coloured or printed endpapers, matching headband, ribbon marker, removable dust jacket: every detail is yours to choose. The spine can be square or rounded, like trade editions.

Preparing your file

Supply a single-page PDF with 3-5 mm bleed; the case wrap needs a specific template (joints, turn-ins, spine) that our studio prepares for you. Free file check and proof before production, as with all our print work.

FAQ

Good to know

The sewing is the same; here the cover is a wrapped rigid case instead of a flexible card. The book stands upright and lasts longer.

From just a few copies digitally (print on demand); offset becomes worthwhile on publishing runs.

Up to 1,064 pages in sewn sections, depending on the paper — ask for the exact spine calculation with your quote.
