Understanding print pricing

Updated 13 June 2026 · Welye, printer in Paris

Why can two print quotes differ twofold? Because price depends on several factors, not just quantity. Here's how a price is built — and how to get the right one first time.

The 6 factors that drive the price

QuantityThe #1 factor. The longer the run, the lower the unit cost (especially in offset).
SizeA large format uses more paper and may require a specific press.
Paper & weightThe paper type and its weight directly affect price and feel.
ColoursSingle- or double-sided, full colour or a spot (Pantone) colour: every pass counts.
FinishingLamination, spot varnish, hot foiling: they elevate the result but add steps.
Converting & deadlineFolding, binding, die-cutting and the requested deadline shape the final cost.

Why price drops sharply with quantity

In offset, set-up (plate making, press calibration) is a fixed cost, whatever the number of copies. It's then spread across the whole run: at 5,000 copies it's diluted; at 100 it weighs heavily per unit. That's why printing "a few more" often costs barely more — and why digital stays smarter for very short runs.

Some starting prices (excl. VAT)

As a guide, here are starting points. The real price depends on the factors above:
